ABSTRACT

In addition to vocabularies, many magic systems are structured around alphabets, including symbols such as runes, glyphs, and sigils, though these symbols are rarely phonetic alphabets in the sense of representing primarily sounds. Magic alphabets tend to be ideogrammatic in that each symbol stands for an idea. ese symbols may also stand for sounds, allowing for magical eects to be unleashed through speech in the form

of incantations or writing in the form of inscriptions. Yet, at their heart, these symbols stand essentially and primarily for ideas.
