ABSTRACT

We live in an information age where we can nd all the information whenever and wherever we need it. However, we do not pay any attention to our natural environment to gain information that may be useful in predicting weather or practicing farming. Our ancestors in Korea settled and have farmed since the Neolithic period (from about 12,000 to 6000 years before present [BP]), observing many natural phenomena (Lee 2005). As a result, many farming and weather-related proverbs, which were expressed in brief and familiar phrases, have been passed down orally from generation to generation (JARES 1979; RDA 1989). Our ancestors had communicated their knowledge through proverbs. Most of their knowledge is useful even to this day (GiATC 2012; KATC 2012). The proverbs not only provided us with the scientic principles of agriculture, but also an insight into the philosophy and social life of the people in the agrarian society of Korea.
