Measurementoftheacousticpropertiesofroomsandtheinteraction betweenaudio,audioequipment(suchasloudspeakers),androomacousticsisanessentialpartofacousticengineering,bothforaudioproduct development and for room acoustics design. It is necessary to prove that a proposeddesignfunctionsthewayitispromised,andmeasurementisthus importantfromtheviewpointofcontractualissuesandqualitycontrol. Itisvirtuallyonlysoundpressuremeasurementsthatcanbedoneovera widefrequencyandamplituderange.Forthisreason,mostmeasurements of other quantities such as particle velocity, intensity, and power are done bytheuseofseveralpressure-sensingmicrophonesandtheotherquantitiescalculatedfromthesemicrophonesignals.Foraudio,itisprimarilythe frequencyresponse,backgroundnoise,andnonlineardistortionthatare important.
