ABSTRACT

The in vivo oxidation of proteins can be an important component of redox systems.7 An example is provided by the methionine-methionine sulfoxide pair and the role of methionine sulfoxide reductase.8,9 Another example is provided with oxidation and cell signaling.10-15Oxidation of lipids13 can create reactive species such as 2-hydroxy-4-nonenal (HNE) (Figure 5.1), which can react with protein nucleophiles including cysteine, lysine, and histidine (see Chapter 2).16
