Clausewitz talks more extensively about engagements: The object of engagements is of two kinds: direct and indirect. They are
indirect if other things intrude, which cannot in themselves neutralize the competitor’s forces. But it can lead up to it, such as in taking a circuitous route or taking actions to possess key areas. Such movements should be regarded merely as means of gaining greater superiority.
