ABSTRACT
Gauge symmetry usually refers to the invariance of a Lagrangian density under spacetime dependent field transformations. The most familiar gauge symmetry is the invariance of the electromagnetic action or Lagrangian density under transformations of the potential which leave the fields unchanged and hence the Lagrangian density, the action and the equations of motion too unaltered.
