ABSTRACT
The preceding chapters have shown how the adaptive immune system actively responds when foreign antigen enters the body. In contrast, there are some situations in which the immune system fails to make a response to a specific antigen and this process is known as immunological tolerance. This chapter outlines the various forms of tolerance and describes why they are necessary.
