ABSTRACT
Many surveying books start by explaining how the various instruments are used, and then describe the reasons for their use. This order has been reversed here, for the benefit of those who like to understand the ultimate purpose of a technique before studying it in detail. Some of the concepts mentioned in this chapter may therefore not be fully clear to readers who are new to this subject; such readers are encouraged to refer to later chapters, as necessary.
