ABSTRACT

In Chapter 6, we note that there is a legacy of substandard man-made cut slopes,ll slopes and retaining walls, known as features in this book, which the engineers in Hong Kong have to deal with. Under the Hong Kong Government Systematic Inspection of Features in the Territory (SIFT), a feature would be registered with a unique reference number if it meets the Geotechnical Engineering Ofce’s feature registration criteria. A SIFT class would then be identied and a report of the feature would be stored in the Slope Information System (SIS). The report would indicate facilities like roads, buildings, etc., in the vicinity of the feature. According to Works Bureau (1999) and the Geotechnical Engineering Ofce (2004a), a Consequence-to-Life Category from 1 to 3 and Economic Consequence Categories from A to C would also be assigned to the feature. The SIS also records any landslip incidents in the vicinity of the feature.
