ABSTRACT

In this paper we propose a numerical analysis of the long-term settlements of a breakwater built in the period 2003-2004 at the Malamocco inlet, using the finite element code PLAXIS 2D in conjunction with a constitutive formulation specifically developed for simulating the creep behaviour of soft soils (Vermeer & Neher 1999). The calibration of the constitutive parameters required for the analysis, with special reference to the secondary compression coefficient, is performed by mainly using a number of piezocone-based site-specific correlations for the geotechnical characterization of Venetian soils, originally developed in the context of a comprehensive, longlasting research project carried out at the Treporti Test Site (Tonni & Gottardi 2011).
