ABSTRACT

Higher education has been in the spotlight recently in several countries for its current and potential role in economic and social development. In the case of India, the Knowledge Commission has articulated the concerns and outlined the strategies that can, among other things, help to build excellence in educational system to meet the knowledge challenges of the 21st century and increase India’s competitive advantage in the eld of knowledge. Education is the cumulated heaps of discoveries. The primary objective of the higher education is to prepare students for employment; the secondary objective is to promote equality and social justice to develop humanism and scientic outlook (Berlia 1998; Report by MHRD Government of India 1990). This paper deals with the higher education in India in general and technical education in particular. The scenario of the education system in India has completely changed in the 21st century. Higher education encompasses science, engineering, and medicine. National institutions in the country deal mainly with research; on the other hand, universities concentrate only on teaching. A good institution should have both components of research and teaching in the right proportion.
