ABSTRACT

Current applications of rare earth intermetallic compounds include high-power, high-temperature samarium-cobalt permanent magnets, microwave devices with improved performance, high-efficiency and lightweight electric motors, biomedical materials for unique medical sensors, energy conservation, new and improved energy sources, fuel for heterogeneous catalysts, and coal gasification and liquefaction. Near-term future and projected applications may include transducers with improved gain performance, automobile ignition systems with improved fuel economy, hydrogen getters, and safety devices for nuclear reactors.
