ABSTRACT
Soil mechanics is the mechanics of granular materials and all the basic definitions and theories of classical mechanics apply equally to soil mechanics.
Most current theories of soil mechanics assume soil is a continuum and stress and strain vary smoothly through the ground unless a well-defined slip plane forms. Some modern particulate theories of soil mechanics consider the forces on individual grains and the interactions between them. These particulate theories are not commonly applied in ground engineering practice.
