ABSTRACT
The printed circuit board (PCB) is the substrate upon which everything else rests. The PCB provides connections between components using traces (looks like tiny wires) and vias (holes). The PCB also insulates components from heat and accidental cross-connections. Because the PCB is itself a manufactured product, all of the potential flaws of manufacturing apply to PCBs as well as more complex parts.
