ABSTRACT

The availability of low-cost micro-electro-mechanical systems technology enables the development of wireless multimedia sensor networks (WMSNs), that is, networks of resource-constrained wireless devices that can retrieve content such as video and audio streams as well as scalar sensor data. WMSN lifetime depends on the number of active nodes and connectivity of the network. Thus, energy used efficiently to maximize the network lifetime. In single-tier flat architecture, the WMSN is deployed with homogeneous sensor nodes of the same sensing, computational and communication capabilities, and functionalities. The development of reliable and energy-efficient protocol stack is important for supporting various wireless sensor networks and particular WMSN applications. The physical layer for the WMSN is related to the hardware transmission technologies defining the means of transmitting raw bits, rather than logical data packets, over the wireless links. Source coding, as one of the functionalities handled at the application layer, in the WMSN environment encompasses traditional communication problems as well as more general challenges.
