ABSTRACT

The development and implementation of the Galerkin finite and spectral element method in three dimensions are straightforward generalizations of those in two dimensions discussed in Chapters 4-7. However, not surprisingly, the bookkeeping is more demanding and the implementation presents us with new challenges related to the efficient computation of various quantities involved in the formulation and the affordable solution of the final system of algebraic or ordinary differential equations. Main issues and basic procedures are discussed in this chapter with reference to the convection-diffusion equation, and complete finite element codes are provided.
