ABSTRACT

Cytology, visual inspection and HPV testing are screening tests for preinvasive and invasive cervical cancer. They are not diagnostic and, therefore, their results must not be used as an indication for treatment. Patients with a positive screening test must be referred for diagnostic test/procedure. Colposcopy and biopsy are diagnostic procedures for preinvasive disease of the cervix. Diagnosis of preinvasive disease of the cervix must be made based on histology reports from cervical biopsy. Treatment of preinvasive disease reduces the incidence of invasive carcinoma of the cervix. In selected patients and with the presence of well-trained colposcopist, “screen and treat” approach may be acceptable. This is, however, a relatively new approach and the long-term impact on the cancer incidence has yet to be evaluated.
