ABSTRACT
This chapter gives a brief background to the statistical terms and concepts used throughout the book. Readers not interested in these details can skip the chapter, although they may have to treat some computer code dealt with later as a black box and their capacity to work with the code creatively may be impeded. The Appendix of Longford (2008) presents the statistical perspective and terminology used in this volume.
