The risk of sustaining a traffic fatality varies considerably between different countries. In the and there are about 0.7 fatalities in traffic accidents per 10 000 inhabitants per year. In the USA, for example, the figure of 1.6 represents an improvement almost 50 per cent since the late 1960s.
