ABSTRACT

This chapter provides information for performing bag-mask ventilation. It begins with a case scenario of a 19-year-old man who is presented with upper airway obstruction after emergent crico-thyroidotomy. The chapter then includes details on indications, contraindications, and information about supplies, positioning and technique. Pearls and pitfalls are also incorporated, providing additional insights and practical advice not always available in other textbooks or articles. The mask is placed on the patient’s face with its broader side on the chin area. It is difficult to obtain a good facial seal with the mask on edentulous patients. Always consider using two hands to grasp the mask in these patients.
