ABSTRACT
When the leader (i.e., coordinator) fails or becomes unreachable, a new leader is elected from among nonfaulty processes. Failures aect the topology of the system-even the partitioning of the system into a number of disjoint subsystems is not ruled out. For a partitioned system, some applications elect a leader from each connected component. When the partitions merge, a single leader remains, and others drop out.
