ABSTRACT

This chapter will review the psychosocial and behavioral issues commonly seen in persons who undergo bariatric surgery. The chapter begins with a discussion of psychological characteristics and eating behaviors of candidates for surgery. The chapter then will highlight the typically positive changes in these domains that are seen after surgery. The chapter concludes with an overview of the psychological and behavioral issues that may present themselves postoperatively and, as a result, threaten the long-term success of bariatric surgery.
