ABSTRACT

Boron icosahedrons, B12, are found in elemental α-boron (Decker and Kasper, 1959; Donohue, 1974, pp. 48-82; Douglas, 2006, pp. 48-51). β-Boron, which is rhombohedral, forms truncated icosahedrons, B60, (Hoard et al., 1970). α-Boron, β-boron, and H 3K BrB12 12 2− + −, , all form in the same space group #166, R m3 . Bucky balls or buckminsterfullerene also forms in truncated icosahedrons, C60. e CSD shows over 650 structures with the word “dodecaborate” in the name of the compound and over 1200 structures with the word “fullerene.” us boron, like carbon, occurs in stable covalently bonded polyhedrons. Table 13.1 contains the crystal data for H 3K BrB12 12 2− + −, , .
