ABSTRACT

Neutron diraction, which was used in this study of crystalline acetylene, complements x-ray analysis. However, the neutron experiments are very expensive and are conducted at national or international reactor facilities. e neutrons are produced by a nuclear chain reaction. A uranium 235 nucleus absorbs a neutron and forms an unstable isotope, uranium 236. In a ssion reaction this nucleus splits into a barium 141 nucleus, a krypton 92 nucleus, and three neutrons. Hence with every event there is a net gain of two neutrons. Neutrons exhibit wave-particle duality. Neutrons can be diracted by crystals and produce a neutron diraction pattern.
