ABSTRACT

Kinect is derived from the words kinetic and connect. It is a revolutionary imaging sensor featuring a depth sensor that consists of an infrared projector and imaging sensor, a color camera, and a multiarray microphone enabling acoustic source localization and ambient noise suppression. Thanks to brave hackers that the open source application programming interfaces (APIs) are possible. Now, Kinect can be sold as a stand-alone sensor. It has been broadly used for many applications relevant to ambient diagnostics, including robotics, three-dimensional (3D) modeling, biometrics, training, clothes fitting, and motion capture (Figure 6.1).
