ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on simple algorithms for automated pattern recognition. Intuitive models are often faster and more robust than overcomplicated ones in solving real-world problems. Here, we do not intend to cover all of the state-of-the-art methods of pattern recognition but only a few fundamental ones that benefit the applications of ambient diagnostics in the following chapters. We cover topics that include the following:

• How can we measure similarities between patterns? • How can we cluster patterns? • How can we classify patterns? • How can we evaluate classification results?
