Motion Sickness Scaling book
This chapter describes motion sickness (MS) scaling, that is, to the quanti˜cation of MS signs and symptoms via questionnaire rating scales. The early development of MS scales is described, along with common currently used scales for assessing past MS history or current state. Methods are discussed for obtaining overall single-answer ratings of discomfort or ratings comprised of multiple clinical signs and subjective symptoms of MS. Some scaling comments are provided that are speci˜c to simulator sickness, cybersickness, or sopite syndrome (Lawson & Mead, 1998; McCauley, 1984; McCauley & Sharkey, 1992). The purpose of this chapter is to assist researchers seeking to choose an existing scale most appropriate to their needs, rather than to offer complete coverage of theoretical scaling issues or scale development.
