ABSTRACT

This chapter describes the typical implementation of robots and unmanned systems within the operational environment, and then turns to the state of the art in HRI highlighting the associated challenges. Next, foundational human-human communication theories impacting the emerging science of HRC are presented, followed by descriptions of research and development efforts using virtual environments (VEs) to explore and ˜ll the gaps inhibiting human-robot collaboration and teaming. Finally, the chapter concludes with descriptions of two important VE application areas: interface design and training.
