ABSTRACT

Professional interpreters must possess a high level of competence in the languages in which they work. The level of competency required has been discussed in Chapter 1 under the subheading of Skills Required for Interpreting (see p. 11). In the context of police and legal procedures, this means that a professional interpreter needs to be competent in everyday language as well as being familiar with specialist vocabulary and registers specific to police and legal processes and procedures in both languages.
