ABSTRACT

Breast feeding represents the most important act of disease prevention and healthy devel opment in human life. The newborn is physically incapable of digesting any natural food stuff other than breast milk – or milk made similar to it. The greatest growth spurt in postnatal life occurs during the breast feeding period in parallel to the development of a digestive tract which is capable of functioning independently: organ formation, growth and organ activity cannot be separated at this age.
