ABSTRACT

Who are you? This question often lives, almost unnoticed, in the initial encounter with the newborn child. In every consultation with a patient, asking this question can help the physician to pause and, for a brief moment to observe with awe the human individual beside him or her. This feeling of reverent wonder is particularly intense when observing the newborn child. A selfreflective attitude of soul can reveal that the child is already an individual human being, i. e., the child’s individuality is already present even before it unfolds and reveals itself (a feeling that also pervades encounters with seriously disabled children).
