In either formulation, reuse programs usually require some level of process reengineering.

Although recycling and reuse are discussed as discrete categories, there is really a spectrum of activities that run from pure recycling to pure reuse. In between the extremes, there is a gray area where materials undergo some amount of transformation in the process of being reused (Figure 9.1).
