ABSTRACT

The purpose of garbage auditing is to create an accurate picture of the waste stream in order to find material efficiency problems and determine where to apply Lean tools for waste reduction, minimization, and process improvement. The garbage interrogation worksheet suggests problems to consider, but a deeper analysis of the whole process is needed in order to understand how those potential problems fit into the real process flow, and which of these problems can be translated into viable projects. Determining the best solution to implement comes only after the problem itself has been analyzed in depth and the process is well understood. Solutions will be driven by hard data. This chapter outlines some Lean tools as they are applied to this type of problem.
