ABSTRACT
The strength of the probabilistic approaches outlined in Chapter 8 lie in their ability to derive structure-specic safety levels. Thus, for structures that have marginally failed a deterministic assessment, it is sometimes possible to demonstrate adequate capacity at the critical limit state via a probabilistic analysis. The actual safety is compared to the required safety in a structure-specic rather than a general sense. This chapter demonstrates the application of these approaches through the examples of three specic bridge structures. All three marginally failed deterministic assessments, and as such, probabilistic assessments were deemed appropriate.
