ABSTRACT
Water is vital to American households, farms, and businesses. In the United States, rainfall averages approximately 4250 × 109 gallons a day. About two-thirds of this returns to the atmosphere through evaporation directly from the surface of rivers, streams, and lakes and transpiration from plant foliage. This leaves approximately 1250 × 109 gallons a day to flow across or through the Earth to the sea.
