Floods, earthquakes, tsunamis, tornadoes, and billowing clouds of ash from obscure volcanoes all share something in common. Over the last several years these events have been featured prominently in the news-and each has had the inevitable e©ect of disrupting the supply chains of entire industries. But these kinds of disruptions were not on the minds of Astellas Pharma executives when thieves stole a trailer from a truck stop containing $10 million of the company’s pharmaceutical products. What followed was a lesson in supply chain risk that felt like a swi§ punch in the gut.
