ABSTRACT

Within the justice system and among law enforcement organizations, the use of visual imagery facilitates a variety of communications. Both adults and children are encouraged to “take a bite out of crime” through the use of television commercials that incorporate the animated crime dog “McGruff” (Miller, Hess, & Orthmann, 2011). Crime mapping tools incorporate visualizations of geographic data to show the relationships between incidents of crime (Boba, 2005). Tables are used to delineate the increases in various crime rates over decades (Davey, 1998). Wanted posters have been used since the period of the Old West until modern times to depict the image and pertinent details of criminals that are wanted by law enforcement organizations (Hall, 2009).
