ABSTRACT

Terrorism is not a new phenomenon. The attacks on the United States on September 11, 2001, the 2004 Madrid bombings, and the 2005 London bombings, among other terrorist attacks, have illustrated the transformation of terrorism and its global reach. This chapter covers the nature and extent of terrorism worldwide. Specifically, it identifies various terrorist groups and the measures implemented to counter these threats. In particular, it identifies the structure, mindset, goals, tactics, targets, and ideologies of past and contemporary international and domestic terrorist groups. It further evaluates the efficacy of measures to combat them. Special attention is paid to the evolution of counterterrorism measures and whom they are designed to protect against.
