ABSTRACT
Statistics is about making statements about a population from data observed from a representative sample of the population. A population is a collection of subjects whose properties are to be analyzed. The population is the complete collection to be studied; it contains all subjects of interest. A sample is a part of the population of interest, a subset selected by some means from the population. The concepts of population, sample, and statistical inference are illustrated in Figure 1.1.
