ABSTRACT
Indications Tracheostomy has been performed since antiquity for the emergency management
of upper airway obstruction. Presently the principal indications include: 1. relief of upper airway obstruction; 2. long-term ventilatory support for patients with respiratory failure; and 3. control of secretions in patients prone to aspirate.
