ABSTRACT

In nature, the amino acid tryptophan (Trp, W) is the precursor of indole alkaloids. For example, the synthesis of serotonin (5-hydroxytryptamine, 5-HT) is shown in Figure 7.2. Similarly, Figure 7.3 shows the biosynthesis of psilocybin, the psychedelic compound found in >200 species of mushrooms. Examples of the biosynthesis of β-carbolines, ergot alkaloids, and other indole alkaloids are shown in Figures 7.4-7.6.
