ABSTRACT

Good design means not only designing for normal human use, but also designing against misuse, unintended uses, and abuses-Chapanis (1996).

• Introduce the concepts of human-machine system (HMS) and intelligent adaptive system (IAS)

• Discuss human-machine interaction and why it applies to HMS design • Discuss the scope of human-machine interaction and the importance of

human-automation interaction taxonomies • Discuss common technological, human performance, and communication

issues that result from poor human-machine interaction • Discuss the need for consistent human-machine systems design

methodologies

Society takes for granted the good design that surrounds it. The car you drove to work today had to be ergonomically conceptualized, designed, and tested considering human physical dimensions and psychological characteristics. The traffic signals that control the chaotic morning flow of traffic had to be conceptualized, designed, and tested while considering human reaction to external stimuli and human vehicle control ability.
