ABSTRACT

We have discussed gravitational waves first as an example of non-stationary space-time and then as possible source of energy loss form dynamical matter sources, both in the context of linearized model. Historically, the inherent nonlinear nature of the field equations as well as the huge coordinate freedom, made it very confusing to reliably assert the ‘reality of gravitational waves’. An interesting account of the history related to this confusion may be seen in [83]. In the next section, we will try to gain an appreciation of the issues and their resolutions.
