ABSTRACT
On a sunny day in the year 1800, William Herschel is working in a darkened room, lit only by a slit of sunlight passing in through the window. This light passes through a prism which splits the light into a rainbow of colours, spreading them out from violet to red across the desk where he is conducting an experiment.
