ABSTRACT
Here we shall parallel the perambulations taken in Chapter 26, so as to derive an expression for the propagation speed of longitudinal waves in terms of medium properties. The analysis performed for a compound pulse generalises to repeated waves. The tasks of determining the amount of mechanical energy associated with each wavelength of a harmonic wave and the associated energy flux per unit cross-sectional area are undertaken in Chapter 28.
