ABSTRACT

In this chapter we present and analyze the most prominent methods for counting votes when every entity (or voter) has just one vote. An extension is also considered to cases in which support for multiple candidates is incorporated into the voting scheme. It becomes clear that how we decide to count the votes-our voting method-plays an influential role in determining the outcome of elections. Moreover, certain situations can arise that render these voting methods less than ideal; such paradoxical situations are identified and discussed for each of the methods presented.
