With the aim of an algal biorefinery to produce mainly fuel derivatives, we can distinguish between two major biocatalytic processing routes: (i) direct synthesis and excretion of compounds that could be used as fuel and (ii) synthesis of fuel precursors and the subsequent biocatalytic release/transformation of these

into fuel derivatives (Fig. 29.1). Figure 29.1 shows the conceptual split in processing (technology) alongside the potential products from each route which will be discussed in subsequent sections.
