ABSTRACT

It has been claimed that transgenic crops have made a positive contribution to global crop production and food security and improved the economic status of farmers who adopted them. However, they have also accelerated changes in farming styles, affecting genetic diversity in agro-ecosystems of many countries that have adopted the biotechnology. For example, the adoption of herbicide-resistant transgenic crops has changed traditional weed management practices and the biodiversity of crop and weed species. It has also raised concerns about the bio-safety to consumers, besides long-term profi tability to farmers.
