ABSTRACT

Because of space limitations, a complete treatment of the isolation of chemical fractions from heavy-element samples cannot be presented here. The literature of the chemistry of the actinide elements is rich and varied. Unfortunately, many of the published procedures do not work atall, or work only under limited conditions, because of the complex nature of actinide elements in solution. The focus here is on a few relevant areas in which some success has been achieved in our laboratory. However, an excellent resource is the National Academy of Science/National Research Council Series on the Radiochemistry of the Elements, published by the US Atomic Energy Commission. Excellent reviews on the chemistries of U[1] and Pu [2] are also available.
