ABSTRACT

Logistics is the term used to describe the moving of goods from point to point along the supply chain. Logistics providers not only move the product, they are often the ones who plan how and when to move the product. Moving goods from foreign countries to distribution centers or retail stores usually involves different modes of transportation, different regulations and fees for each country, and potential delays from overloaded ports, weather disruptions, and other causes. As supply chains are extended throughout the world and become more complex, the logistics function is emerging as a critical part of supply chain management (SCM). As you read this company profile and the chapter in the book, think about these questions:

• How would you move bars of soap from the factory to the grocery store? • How would you move a locomotive from the factory to the railroad?
